On 1st January Tanzania assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January 2006.
In his capacity as the President of the Security Council, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga, the Permanent Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations, held bilateral meetings with other Ambassadors members of the Security Council on its work programme for the month of January 2006 on Tuesday 3rd January 2006.
In his first meeting, Ambassador Mahiga met the outgoing President of the Security Council for the month of December, Sir Emyr Jones Parry, the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom. Ambassador Mahiga also met with the Permanent Representatives of the United States, Ambassador John Bolton, Ambassador Adamantios Vassilakis (Greece), Ambassador Kenzo Oshima (Japan), Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser (Qatar), the Deputy Representative of France, Ambassador Michel Duclos, and the Charge de Affaires of Argentina, Mr. Alberto D’Allotto.
Among the issues discussed were the question of Ethiopia/Eritrea, the situation in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Haiti as well as the Council’s Ministerial Meeting on the Peace, Security and Development in the Great Lakes Region to be chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania on 27 January 2006.
The Council will be meeting in a formal meeting on Wednesday, January 4th to adopt its work programme.
